How can I use a stock photo I find online?

A lot of times when you find an image online that you want to use it might not be that clear what you need to do in order to legally license the image and use it for your creative project. Whether there are questions surrounding the license type, the usage, any restrictions, who the actual copyright holder is or if your usage requires a model or property release. To sum up some of the ways you can use photos at Cutcaster we created this short writeup to show you how you can use Cutcaster images?

Cutcaster images may be applied to the following uses (in most cases limited to 500,000 copies under our Standard License):

• You can use any images in advertising posters and brochure design for use in promoting the sale of other products.

• Within editorial or advertising copy in newspapers, magazines, books, book covers, school textbooks, editorials and directories.

• In coordination with opt-in marketing.

• For product packaging.

• On letterhead and business cards, brochures, pamphlets, catalogs and on pop-up and/or panel displays for use in trade shows or at conventions.

• In multimedia presentations and incorporated into film and video for distribution and/or sale in the home video market OR for broadcast and/or theatrical display..

• Use as a background image or splash screen within software .

• On cover art and/or artwork used on in CD or DVD .

• In eBooks for any e-device reader, including multi-seat license electronic textbooks.

Please note, certain restrictions apply depending on whether you’re purchasing the images under a Standard Licensing contract or if you are purchasing an Extended License (EL). You can learn more about the differences between licenses by clicking on this link to our legal page.

Are there ways I CANNOT use Cutcaster images?

There are some use cases, in which you are prohibited from using an image purchased from Cutcaster under our Standard License. These include:

• Print runs exceeding 500,000 copies unless an Extended License is purchased which would give you an unlimited print run.

• Print on demand (POD) projects such as wallpaper, postcards, mousepads, mugs, t-shirts, posters, giclee prints, artwork and other items.

• Any unbecoming or derogatory depiction of the model or persons pictured in an image, including use of models in pornographic material, political endorsements and alcohol, drug, or tobacco campaigns.

You also cannot:

• Resell or share Cutcaster content.

• Use any Cutcaster image as part of a trademark, service mark, or company logo.

• Try to depict that the image was created by you or anyone other than the copyright holder of that image.

Please always read the contract first before you buy any images form Cutcaster and consult your legal team if you have specific questions. We are here to help but are not a substitute for your specific usage. Feel free to contact us at webmaster AT cutcaster DOT com.

What is a comp image and does Cutcaster offer them?

A ‘comp’ (short for complimentary) is a free, low-resolution, watermarked version of Cutcasters’ images. Buyers will generally download comps to evaluate an image’s suitability in a particular creative project or to evaluate varying page designs.

‘Comps’ may also be used by photo researchers or photo buyers who are doing research or purchasing images for a third party and need to seek this party’s approval of the image(s) prior to purchasing. Comp images may not be incorporated into any finished products.

To download a comp, you must first login to Cutcaster and then the download will be moved to your desktop.

Update to Stock Photos, Royalty Free Images and Illustrations Cutcaster still needs

We talk to 10-20 buyers a day and gather requests for content that they need now.  If you have photos, illustration, or vectors that fit into the categories below, we need your work!  Send in your best work and be included in lightboxes we send directly to customers!  As with all submissions we are looking for good photographic composition, lighting, and technique.  Remember to think like a designer when keywording your images.  Never spam keywords that don’t fit your images.

Business People and Concepts:

We need shots of people at work, business equipment, offices, and office buildings, people in business attire. Remember, not every shot of a person needs to be isolated on white, and not every model needs to be looking straight at the camera.  Use your imagination, but keep the poses natural, and relaxed and always use a model release.

Food and Drink:

We need high quality images of food and drink, as well as people cooking, and eating those meals. Grocery store shots are very desirable, but watch your logos and trademarks!
Keywords:  Food |  Wine |  Cooking | Grocery Store |  Eating |  Drinks |  Feast | Alcohol

Holiday and Seasonal Themes:

At Cutcaster, we use the term Holiday to describe a seasonal event, not a vacation!  We need all of the holiday themes.  These are huge sellers!  Christmas, Yom Kippur,  Ramadan, New Years, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Chinese New Year, Earth Day. Birthday themes are also needed.  If it is a holiday celebrated anywhere in the world we would love to see it!

Home and Garden:

Household images of beautiful interiors, furniture, modern kitchens and baths.  Pretty gardens, and pool side views are also needed. Home repair and improvement are also needed.

Personal Care and Cosmetics:

Personal care and spa treatments are hot right now.  Grooming, massage, acupuncture, yoga, and outdoor health activates are fast sellers.  Any way you pamper yourself!  Cosmetics are also hot. Portraits highlighting classic or dramatic makeup and hair  are needed.
Keywords:  Spa |  Make-up |  Yoga |  Massage |  Women’s Health |   Diet

Financial Images:

It’s all about money.  Cash concepts, taxes, real estate, trading.  Business people in banking situations, or simple designs with cash concepts.  The stock market is hot right now.  Submit images that show thrift and savings, as well as upbeat images of financial stability.
Keywords:  Money |  Taxes |  Real Estate |  Trading |  Banking |  Savings

Kid Stuff:

We love kids, from infants to teens, advertisers are looking for great looking kids in natural poses, as well as child related products. Don’t forget, when shooting kids you must have parental consent, and a signed model release!
Keywords:  Infant |  Toddler |  Teen |  Child Care |  Family

Healthcare:

Healthcare topics are huge right now.  Swine flu, flu season, medical offices, and professionals. Medications, and prescription drugs,  holistic medicine.  If it has to do with health, we need it!  We are very interested in seeing vectors on this topic as well.
Keywords:  Medicine |  Flu Season |  Doctor |  Drugs |  Xray |  Dental

Religious and Spiritual Images:

We need all of the world religions represented in our library:  Christian and Catholic, Muslim, Judaism, Hindu and Buddhist, as well as lesser known spiritual paths, including Paganism, Sufism,  Amish and other religious cultures.  Icons, rituals, festivals, symbols (for you vector makers), traditional food, and items as well as spiritual locations.  Be sure when submitting images of churches/mosque/ synagogues to include the name of the building, and where it is located, as they did here.
Keywords:  Christian |   Muslim |  Judaism |  Hindu |  Buddhist |  Spiritual

Diversity:

In a very multicultural world, it is important to show people of many cultures, and ethnic backgrounds. Hispanic, Asian, and African Americans in business settings are highly desired.  As well as families, and groups.  Business settings, home, and school pictures are desired.  We also need people expressing their native cultures, such as Hindu traditions and Native Americans in traditional clothing.

Sports Images and Vectors:

There is a wide world of sports out there, and we need them all.  Football, baseball, soccer, golf, rugby, squash, cricket, tennis, mountain biking, water sports, and winter sports.  From drag racing to curling, we need them all.  For vector makers, be creative!  Make your sports come alive!
Sports:  Winter Sports |  Water Sports |  Soccer |  Football |  Baseball |   Golf

Electronics and Telecommunications:

We all have them:  cell phones, computers, flat panel tv’s, surround sound.  We also need the back bones to these systems:  Server rooms, computer rooms, satellite arrays,  circuit boards and more.  If it makes the internet run, makes your phone ring, or your cable work, we want it!

Lots of New and Exclusive Images uploaded to Cutcaster

Sorry for the slight delay in the reviewing of images over the last week. We are in the process of doing a bit of spring cleaning in our database and removing some of the older images that weren’t selling and re-keywording some of your images. That two pronged effort to clean up the database and some of the files keywords have taken some of the attention of our awesome reviewers off of the pending que and that is some of the cause of why the reviews may be slightly slower over the last week. Also if your files were smaller than 1600×1200 pixels then they were removed from the system because they didn’t meet the minimum file size that we maintain at Cutcaster.

On the other hand we have been getting a record number of uploads for Cutcaster which is great for our images buyers. We are all working overtime to make sure that the images and vectors are placed into the marketplace as quickly as possible and apologize for any delays. We also want to make sure we have the highest possible quality as well as best keyworded files so buyer don’t waste time looking around Cutcaster. This is a huge step forward for everyone. Keep the content coming and we will make sure it is available as soon as possible. Thanks again for your support.
