We had a wonderful time at PictureHouse the other week and met a lot of people we have only spoken to over the phone or by email — it was great to see some old friendly faces and meet a ton of new potential users of Cutcaster (if you remember, we actually launched at last year’s Picturehouse event!). We raffled away an Amazon Kindle and we’d like to take this opportunity to name the winner. Drum rolll please…. The Cutcaster Team is proud to present Van Bucher of Carousel Research with a brand new Amazon Kindle! Thanks for joining the raffle and good luck next year!

We are liking the new search and it is really returning better results. Keep the feedback coming.

We just released another new tweak that photo buyers, image researchers and those looking to license vector files will hopefully like and use.

Filename search is functional on live. You can now search by watermark filename (which is what you get if you drag & drop the comp onto your desktop), and by the comp filename (if you click on download comp button). These should help photo buyers find the perfect image and illustrations faster at Cutcaster. Let us know what you think.

Have you seen Francetucky yet? Funny site that uses stock photos to tell a story. Take a look when you want a laugh. Have a great weekend and keep letting us know what you think about the new image search engine we rolled out.

1. A chef creating/experimenting with food utilizing molecular gastronomy. (If you are not familiar with what this is, please do a bit of research before submitting photos…it is a very specific type of culinary preparation…and a really fascinating one!).

2. Scientists (ideally with tools) observing recent volcano (possibly Alaska Volcano Observatory?). Ideally, two people or more.

3. An object rusting outside (truck, bike, toy, etc). Prefer to see sky….which would give the idea of wet, rain or snow.

4. A way of preventing rust of an object (garage, cover, shed, etc.). To relate to spec #3 above

5. A scientist studying a pyramid (ideally Egyptian or American). The point is to have the person obviously studying the construction or materials that make up the pyramid in an attempt to determine how the pyramid was constructed.

6. Several pyramid-shaped things: a pyramid-shaped razor sharpener, a pyramid tent, a pyramid with vegetables. In fact, anything that shows an example of ‘pyramid power’ that does not contain any actual person using the pyramid.

7. An actual pyramid. Ideally, it should be without any people around it as this will be a large background image.

8. Research scientist Alexandra Horowitz, Assistant Professor from Barnard College in New York, working with one or more dogs (who were the subject of her experiment). OR color photo of marine biologist/nature writer Rachel Carson.

9. Theodore Fujita, the Japanese-American scientist who did a lot of research on tornadoes at the University of Chicago, including photographing them from planes overhead and designing and creating a tornado simulator in his laboratory. OR Wayne Fish, research chemist in Oklahoma, who has worked with a team of scientists to come up with a proposal for using reject watermelons as a source for a biofuel.

10. Volcanologist working or observing – using a tool used for measuring or observing.

If you have photos you think will work or are similar enough please upload them to Cutcaster or send us an email letting us know that you have it in your image portfolio so we can add it to the lightbox we are creating for this buyer. Thanks.

Thanks to Shannon Fagan from SAA for posting this video taken at Picturehouse on how Cutcaster’s photo and vector bidding process works for content buyers.  At Cutcaster, if a photo buyer has more time or a smaller budget they are able to bid on any file in the content marketplace and essentially name their price. This immediately sends an email to the contributor who uploaded the file Cutcaster and that contributor can elect to accept, decline or re-submit a new offer back to the interested buyer. See the below video for a step by step guide to bidding for content at Cutcaster.

The engineers at Cutcaster just completed Phase I of our first major upgrade to photo and vector search and have released the latest, never before seen, jazzed up search engine to the live site this evening. Take it for a test spin and let us know what you think. The search returns are more evenly distributed between our outstanding contributors and return a greater variety of images for single words and compound phrases than in the past. We are not done yet though and have much more planned for search and search speed. This is phase 1 of a major revamp which will lead to the right image getting in front of the right customer faster, more satisfied buyers and more sales for contributors. Please let us know what you think below or by email to feedback@cutcaster.com.

Thank you for your support of www.cutcaster.com!

Somebody pinch us.  Is summer over and are we really into Fall?  It’s amazing how fast the days fly by and what has been accomplished in that short period of time at Cutcaster with your help.  We quickly passed 300k uploads to Cutcaster in August but are in need of specific content that our buyers have requested. To see an updated list of images and illustrations that we still need and will be showcased to buyers, view the Photos and Vectors we need page here. We are attending the PictureHouse tradeshow in New York on October 14th and need your shots to show to the hundreds of buyers who will attend this event!  We are at table G4, right next to Getty, so stop by to say hello and enter to win an Amazon Kindle.

Here are a few releases you may not have noticed.
1. Our first premium photography and vector collection was released called Crescendo. I am sure a couple of you noticed the creative firestorm it caused ;-)
2. Scaled pricing for different resolutions was introduced.
3. Expanded the scope of our rights offering with new Extended Licenses.
4. We increased the speed of the site and speed of search. Test it out from your last visit.

We hired a new Creative Director to help with the growing collection. Along with the review team, she will be aggressively editing the collection, building “feature lightboxes,” and communicating with and recruiting new photographers.  She is also helping to improve our upload method and review process in general. You can reach her at creativedirector@cutcaster.com.

Don’t forget our Affiliate Program!

If you have a personal website, you can use our links and logos here to earn 10% from buyers and 5% from sellers who you refer!

Fresh, New, and Exclusive!
From June to September, we demo’ed the site for and talked with hundreds of new buyers to introduce them to the new Corporate Buyer Accounts.  We have forged personal relationships with our buyers and are responding to their suggestions on content and site mechanics. WE KNOW ATTRACTING  BUYERS IS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE FOR EVERYONE AND WE ARE WORKING HARD TO PROMOTE THE SITE EVERYWHERE.

We know many of you mass market your photos.  Our buyers are also looking for exclusive content and want to find more of it at Cutcaster.  Don’t forget you earn 50% on exclusive content and you can set the price.

Thanks again for submitting to Cutcaster, it is your great work that makes us grow!  Keep an eye out for more improvements to site speed and search in the coming weeks!

Warm Regards,
The Cutcaster team

Every photo buyer, like yourself, can choose from multiple resolutions offered at Cutcaster, ranging from XSmall, Small, Medium, Large and all the way up to XXLarge etc. We introduced the tiered pricing earlier this year and answer a lot of emails about what resolution size is large enough to fill a specific creative need.

xxl

So how do you go about determining which file size is right for your creative project? We are here to make sure you get the most image for your money.

Do you want to use this stock image for web or digital use, such as your photography blog, website, a banner advertisement or a powerpoint presentation? If this is the case then you may be best off just downloading the smaller file sizes. For example an image resolution that is around 600 x 800 pixels would work well for that.

Internet Blogs Concept

Are you planning to use the stock photo for a print use instead? If your desired print size is approximately 5 inches by 7 inches, i.e. about the size of a greeting card, we would recommend downloading the medium resolution file (~1200 x 1600 pixels). If you also wanted to use that image on your website it would work well for your digital or web needs.

If you want this picture for full-page, A4 size printing, then you will likely need the larger image resolutions (i.e. 2300 x 3000 pixels). You can use this for smaller size print needs, as well as web and digital use.

Magazines

If you have any other questions on what size photo file you want to download and whether it will be appropriate for your creative needs please just email, help@cutcaster.com.
